Browne Family Vineyards 2014 Tribute

Sitting in a tasting room in downtown Seattle trying new wines while catching up with an old friend seemed quite civilized. Such was the case recently at the Browne Family Vineyards tasting room in Pioneer Square. We love our wine tastings in Napa or Sonoma or Walla Walla, so I was excited to learn about this lovely spot on First Avenue that just recently opened. Stylish as all get out, cozy and just a perfect spot to chat and laugh and drink some amazing wine. Which leads me to this bottle of Tribute. My friend Jackie & I were both quite taken with it, taking home bottles. We have since served it at several gatherings gaining much praise. TPS was back visiting his mom in Montclair and picked up a bottle there, so it is distributed widely, which is always nice as I sometimes write about wines that folks from afar have a tough time finding. 

From the makers site: Dark fruit, flint and tanned leather aromatics. Fruit bomb with Van Cherry, currant and all spice. Finishes with anise, toasty oak and lingering dark fruit flavors. Acid is bright and balances this full bodied and round tannin wine.

Varietal Blend: 39% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, 10% Petit Verdot, 6% Petite Sirah, 6% Carmenere

Andrew Will Winery Klipsun Cabernet Sauvignon 2000

The gift of wine can be such a lovely thing. During the Holidays we are given some pretty special bottles as our friends know how much we enjoy them. It is a huge treat to prepare a special meal around one of these special bottles. This Wine Wednesday post is as much about our love of all things Andrew Will Winery on Vashon Island as it is about this particular bottle. This Klipsun Vineyard Red Mountain Cab is pretty out of this world. Perfect for a chilly eve and a hearty meal to go with this meaty red. When you are perusing the wine shelves at your grocer or wine shop or scanning the wine list while dining out, if an Andrew Will catches your eye and intrigues you, go for it. Same with any wines from grapes grown on Red Mountain. I promise you won’t regret it. Andrew Will is owned by our pal Chris who is the partner of Robin Pollard who makes our POLLARD private label Watson Kennedy coffee for us. 

A bit about Chris and Red Mountain where the grapes for this bottle were grown, by way of wine.com. Andrew Will Winery was started in 1989 and is owned by Chris Camarda. The winery was launched out of a love for wine that Chris developed while working in the restaurant trade for almost 20 years. Named after his son Will and nephew Andrew, Andrew Will has been a major contributor in putting Washington State on the map as a world-class wine-producing region.

A coveted source of top quality red grapes among premier Washington producers, the Red Mountain AVA is actually the smallest appellation in the state. As its name might suggest, it is actually neither a mountain nor is it composed of red earth. Instead the appellation is an anticline of the Yakima fold belt, a series of geologic folds that define a number of viticultural regions in the surrounding area. It is on the eastern edge of Yakima Valley and its slopes face southwest towards the Yakima River, ideal for the ripening of its grapes. The area’s springtime proliferation of cheatgrass, which has a reddish color, actually gives the area the name, “Red” Mountain.



 

 

DeLille Cellars Four Flags Cabernet Sauvignon

The gift of a glorious bottle of wine is always a good thing. It is a fun way to later on down the road remember the giver and relish the event when it was given. Such is the case with this Wine Wednesday bottle. We are so fortunate to live in a state that produces world class wine. If you see ‘Red Mountain’ on a bottle, just know you are in for a treat. Red Mountain is located in the Yakima area just west of the Tri-Cities. TPS & I have spent some amazing times in this region enjoying off the charts amazing wine. DeLille does their magic and bottles in Woodinville, just outside of Seattle. We each enjoyed a glass of this with dinner last eve. Take-out, and a crazy good glass of wine. Ahhhh, the high/low of it!  

From a bit of web searching–by now you know I love a little ‘wine speak’ as it always makes me smile: The wine opens with aromas of anise and blackberry with oak on the nose. Rich layers of anise, blackberry and black cherry on the mid-palate. Dark and deep, this wine is compelling and delicious. There is a vibrant mouthfeel that tells me this will be a long-ager. The wine has moderate tannins that persist and will take time to dissipate.



 

 

Kiona Red Mountain Lemberger

20160113-075249.jpg We took a week-end trip to the Yakima and Tri-Cities area years back to enjoy the scenery and tour some wineries that the area is so well known for. This is when we stumbled across Kiona Vineyards. It is also the first time we were exposed to and tried Lemberger. Kiona was the first winery in the United States to produce Lemberger in 1980, which has since become a Red Mountain cult classic. I was so happy to see it gracing the shelves of our local grocer out on the island. It was perfect with our roasted chicken with root vegetables on Sunday for supper. Thought it would make the perfect Wine Wednesday post as it was as we remembered it, so very lovely and a heck of a great price for such a tasty bottle.

About the Wine: This consistent award-winner is a signature wine for Kiona. Lemberger is a relatively obscure Eastern European grape that is sometimes known as Blaufränkisch. The vine grows exceedingly well on Red Mountain, where we have established the go-to vineyard in Washington for the varietal. We use our premium fruit and extensive experience with the wine to craft an immensely versatile and universally appealing medium-bodied wine with plenty of style.

Tasting Notes: This bright, medium-bodied, fruit-forward wine surprises many with its unique characteristics. Kiona’s Estate Lemberger has a vibrant, well-balanced palate along with plenty of earth and spice that showcases Red Mountain’s unique terroir. This wine goes to show that Red Mountain is well-suited to varietals well outside the standard set.
