A Country Sunday Brunch

September 29, 2026

In the Hudson Valley we often swap a ‘Sunday Supper’ for a ‘Sunday Brunch’ so it is a change up from what we do on the island in the Summer. We love both for different reasons, but the shared reason is we love breaking bread with family & friends. On July and August Vashon Island days, they are most likely sunny and the boat traffic on Colvos Passage provides much visual entertainment while we enjoy our meal in the early evening. At Hawthorne, Autumn has absolutely set in, so it gets darker earlier so the brunch feels fresh and guests still have a good amount of day to enjoy after we say our goodbyes. We always serve brunch family style. Having big platters of things set out for the meal. This Sunday, I made a big frittata with caramelized shallots, mushrooms and herbed chèvre. TPS made a plum tart for dessert. We also had bagels with cream cheese and lox. Along with a big platter of heirloom tomatoes we picked up at various farm stands in the area. Bloody Marys, mimosas, Mariage Freres tea and Watson Kennedy Pollard Coffee were served. It is just so lovely to spend time with those we love, enjoying a meal, telling stories and laughing. All set among the green at Hawthorne.
