Blogfest on Design

20130522-082015.jpg The last 2 days have been action packed. I have been attending the Blogfest on Design, which is an event hosted by the wonderful Kravet fabric company. It all started off at the Kips Bay Showhouse on Monday, finishing up with studio tours at Kravet yesterday. With tons of interesting things in between. Here is a quick look at some of those events.

20130522-082437.jpg An afternoon was spent at the Hearst building and offices for an introduction and look into the world of the HGTV magazine.

20130522-082616.jpg The magazine is fairly new to the market, but it has just taken off and is immensely popular. After meeting the incredibly upbeat editor, I can see why. Her positive energy & attitude infuse the colorful, idea filled magazine.

20130522-082859.jpg A yummy lunch was served and we were treated to a presentation by Thom Filicia, later being joined for a panel discussion with Alexa Hampton. What an energetic duo they are.

20130522-083224.jpg Fab hot pink with a smidge of green to mimic the pink and green chairs at the lunch. Great attention to detail.

20130522-083423.jpg With a lively cocktail party at the antique emporium Newel. I use the word emporium because the word store does not even begin to cut it. Newel is 5 huge floors filled with world class antiques. I have never seen anything even close to that scale of antiques in one setting. Kind of mind blowing, really.

20130522-083850.jpg Beautiful vignettes are set up on the first floor, along with incredible artwork at every turn.

20130522-084017.jpg Loved this idea from the cocktail party. Crudités set about on a flat bed of grass. So clever, so creative.

20130522-084222.jpg A highlight of the 2 days was meeting Aerin Lauder, who presented her new line with Lee Jofa. What a cool gal. Here new fabrics are just stunning. They work beautifully along with her new brand of lifestyle goods, Aerin. It was such a pleasure meeting her.

20130522-084839.jpg Touring the Kravet studios is such a visual experience. Above are some of my favorite fabrics I spotted.

20130522-085004.jpg It was such a fun 2 days filled with tons of interesting people and experiences. The best!

20130522-085145.jpg I then met Ted and Bailey at Eataly and we picked up things for a meal outside at Madison Square park. If you have not yet been to Eataly, put it on your list, for sure. Another mind boggling experience of LOTS. Packed with food, packed with people–really an amazing spot.

More NYC adventures tomorrow. I wonder why I am really tired when my head hits the pillow each night…

Kips Bay Decorator Show House

20130521-053650.jpg Yesterday was the kick-off of the Blogfest on Design. Some of you might remember, this was the event I attended last year too. Folks from around the country coming together (who write blogs where design is part of the mix) for a few action packed days of design heaven. Pure fun for me. The day began at the Kips Bay Show House. I remember reading about Kips Bay when I was a kid, interested in design and thinking how cool it would be to see it. It is a townhouse filled with inspiration and design ideas. A different designer does each room, creating a design laboratory that is just visually amazing. It is quite hard to describe, so I will let the photos do the talking. Enjoy!

More of the Fab Kips Bay

20120531-065209.jpg I thought the Kips Bay Decorator Show House warranted a 2 day tour, as there is just so much beauty & detail to soak in. Here is more of all that good stuff.

20120531-071435.jpg Special thanks to the kind folks at Kips Bay for letting us take photos so we could all share how special the 2 homes turned out. To the host of designers who created such magical spaces, it was a delight to meet so many of you and chat a bit. Bunny Williams, Brian McCarthy, David Kleinberg, Thom Filicia, Charlotte Moss, Jamie Drake, Bryant Keller, Alexa Hampton, Todd Alexander Romano and many more thank you so much for all the design inspiration!

Kips Bay Show House

20120530-070703.jpg As promised last week, I thought a post about the 40th Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House would be a fun mid-week visual tour. I am still buzzing from all the exciting things we did, and all the cool folks I met at the Blogfest on Design that I attended last week in New York. It all started off at the Kips Bay House. The 2 penthouses were at The Aldyn on Riverside Boulevard, overlooking The Hudson River. Since I was a young kid interested in design, I have read about Kips Bay, so it was such a treat to go, and meet many of the designers who put the rooms together. As in most show houses, ideas abound. Here is what caught my attention and my eye.

More tomorrow…

The New Traditionalists

20120525-082001.jpg Throwing a good party is an art form. And I am talking a good party, not an average party. The closing event for the Blogfest on Design I attend the past few days in New York, was in the showroom of The New Traditionalists. These gents know how to throw a party. Smartly dressed folks, swell drinks, hearty food, just the right music–and the stage was set for a festive evening. It has been the only party I have ever attended that served fried chicken presented on oversized wood cutting boards. Creative indeed. The party took place around all the beautiful pieces they create, that are designed in New York and manufactured in New England. The parting treat was a muslin bag which included matches (which you know I love) as well as a handkerchief. The spot-on finishing touch to a pretty darn perfect party.

A Full Day of Design

20120523-074759.jpg It is another early start this morning with a full day & evening on this last day of the Blogfest on Design. I will write a lengthier posts about the events next week, so please excuse the brevity. The day yesterday began at the Hearst building, with meeting the editors of the above 3 publications. It was a lovely event. The peonies are just bursting in the above vase.

20120523-075234.jpg It was then onto the Elle Decor show house, which was incredibly visual and creative.

20120523-075341.jpg Then we were off to a yummy lunch in the Kravet showroom in the D&D Building. It is the Decoration and Design center for New York. We were then treated to a marvelous presentation by the talented Alexa Hampton. She and I chatted before she spoke. What a lovely, lovely gal.

20120523-075844.jpg After perusing design showrooms, with one of my favorite being Brunschwig & Fils, we were on to Baccarat and a glass of champagne with a view of the city. It was such a fun day!

Blogfest on Design

20120522-062318.jpg It was a very exciting late afternoon as the Blogfest on Design event began. Margaret Russell of Architectural Digest welcomed us to the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, and stressed how much she and her magazine rely on design blogs for information, ideas & inspiration. We toured the 2 amazing penthouses, that were stunningly put together by some of New York’s top designers.

20120522-062956.jpg I took tons of photos to share, but am up early for an all-day event, so will post a lengthy Kips Bay update next week when we are back in Seattle. But I did want to share my favorite part. A room was done in homage to the late Albert Hadley, whom I hold in the highest regard. The silver frame holding his photo on a side table, was just the perfect touch.

20120522-063411.jpg Being a famous lover of gin, no wonder I adored him so much, an all-gin bar was set on a console. That brought a huge smile to my face.

20120522-063617.jpg And the parting gift from Margaret Russell was this “Don’t Forget” pad that Mister Hadley was so well known for using. It could not of been a better touch.

20120522-063844.jpg It is also TPS’s 50th birthday today! He is spending the day with his parents in Montclair, then we are having dinner, just the 2 of us, with Bailey, of course, tonight. A perfect birthday day.

Watson Kennedy Matches Strike Again

20120516-075526.jpg They are back! Our new batch of matches arrived late yesterday afternoon. Just in the nick of time for our New York trip. Over the years, we have given a box of matches when a customer buys a candle. I have just always liked the graciousness of giving a small treat, like the matches, when a candle is purchased. Plus, both shops have hotels within close proximity, so many guests like to light a candle in their room. I have had customers say that many stylish homes they visit have a box of Watson Kennedy matches sitting next to the candles–I love that!

20120516-080149.jpg I also thought it would be fun to use them in place of business cards on this upcoming trip. I will be attending the Blogfest on Design for a few days next week (more on that in the coming days) and thought the matches could be something different to hand out instead of a card.
